Have you ever met a Christian who seems to be in a constant state of anger or discontent? It’s easy to look at the world around us and feel overwhelmed and burdened. But what if joy isn’t just a fleeting emotion? What if it’s something much deeper, something that can withstand the chaos of the world?

The Apostle John, in his first letter, offers a profound understanding of true joy. He begins not with a greeting, but with a powerful declaration, giving a firsthand, literal account of Jesus Christ. The disciples walked with him, ate with him, and touched him. This tangible, physical experience is the foundation of our faith. John then reveals the ultimate purpose of this testimony: “And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”

This joy isn’t a “Pollyanna” positivity that ignores life’s struggles. It’s a deep-rooted contentment in God’s truth. It’s a joy that doesn’t depend on our circumstances, our feelings, or what’s happening in the news. The world is fallen, and trials are inevitable. But our joy is rooted in the unshakable truth that Jesus was revealed to us, that he came to restore our broken relationship with God, and that his work on the cross gives us eternal life. As the sermon says: “Joy is this deep-rooted contentment in God’s truth.”

This 360-degree joy is not just for Sundays or good days; it’s a continuous, ongoing reality for those who are rooted in the gospel. The world and our flesh will try to distract us with negativity and fear, but we can choose to be filled with the truth of Christ instead.

“Joy is this deep-rooted contentment in God’s truth.”

"Our fellowship that we have with God is connected through Christ. And Christ then is connected to God…our fellowship that we have with our creator, that we can actually have with our creator, is through Christ first and because of Christ. Now we have this fellowship. We have this deep connection. We have this deep, profound connection to our creator.""
