Membership at Community Bible Church Strongs: A Commitment to the Family

Introduction: The Visible Expression of the Invisible Body

In a world that often encourages us to go it alone and treat faith as a private, individual pursuit, God designed the Christian life to be lived in deep community. Formal membership at Community Bible Church Strongs isn’t an administrative hurdle; it’s a heartfelt, public commitment that makes discipleship possible.

When you trust Christ, you are spiritually united to His global Body. Membership at Community Bible Church Strongs is the tangible, practical, and accountable way we live out that spiritual reality together. It is a promise to a specific, visible family of believers that allows us to fulfill our mission to love God wholeheartedly, love people authentically, and make disciples who transform the world. As Watchman Nee observed, “The local church is the only place in the world where the Body of Christ is visibly expressed.”

Part I: The Foundation of Identification and Accountability

The New Testament consistently shows us patterns of belonging that require a defined group. Being a Christian means being part of something specific—not a spectator, but a participant. We are committed to being a Community of Belonging where everyone is welcome, but belonging also requires defined commitment.

1. The Call to Be Counted: A Visible Community

The earliest church was never a vague assembly of people. They were a defined group that others could be “added” to. This requires a clear understanding of who is inside the church family and who is still exploring the faith.

Acts 2:41 (ESV): “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.”

Acts 2:47 (ESV): “…praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

This language suggests a formal, recognizable body. The church was, and still should be, a way of knowing who we are committed to serving and supporting as we strive to be Rooted in Scripture and live by Grace + Truth.

2. Guided by Leaders: Submission and Care

Perhaps the clearest call to committed belonging comes from the way the Bible structures leadership. Your church leaders are called to care for your soul, and you are called to submit to their guidance. This two-way responsibility is impossible without a committed, defined relationship, ensuring we remain Rooted in Scripture.

Hebrews 13:17 (ESV): “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.”

This verse highlights a key promise at Community Bible Church Strongs: our elders promise to keep watch over your souls and will give an account to God for this specific group. In turn, you promise to obey and submit to them.

As pastor and theologian Tim Keller points out, the logic is simple: “You can’t obey Heb 13:17 without membership.” Similarly, Voddie Baucham states that membership is the only way this accountability can be exercised: “The only way for the church to function, the only way for the leaders to be able to know who they’re responsible for, is for there to be a defined membership.” Matt Chandler explains that this verse forces a pastor to ask, “Who will I, as a pastor, give an account for?” Membership answers that question clearly.

Part II: The Functions of a Committed Community

Membership is the loving framework that allows Community Bible Church Strongs to function the way Christ intended: through discipleship, accountability, and a shared mission of making disciples who transform the world.

3. Caring for One Another: The Safety of Accountability

Membership provides the necessary boundary for true, loving accountability—including the difficult but necessary process of church discipline. This practice, modeled by Jesus, is designed to bring a straying believer back to the fold and protect the integrity of our gospel witness. This is an act of authentic relationship founded on Grace + Truth.

Matthew 18:15-17 (ESV): “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone… If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.”

When Christ commands bringing an appeal to “the church,” He presupposes a defined, authorized body that can make a final declaration.

Jonathan Leeman of 9Marks emphasizes that when Community Bible Church Strongs affirms members and, when necessary, disciplines them, we are carrying out the authority Christ gave us, often called the “keys of the kingdom.”

4. Growing Together: The Body of Christ & Future Leaders

The Bible’s metaphors for the church all point to interdependence and mutual reliance. We are the Body of Christ, the Household of God, and a Spiritual Building. You are a vital and necessary part of this body, and our commitment to raising up Future Leaders requires defined commitment.

1 Corinthians 12:12, 27 (ESV): “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ… Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”

Ephesians 4:11-16 (ESV): “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ… so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine…”

This process of equipping and building up requires you to be committed. As Warren Wiersbe taught, “God wants us to grow up, not just swell up.” That spiritual growth happens when we are committed to the body, using our gifts to serve and receive teaching. John MacArthur reminds us that the pastor’s primary role is not to do the ministry for you, but to “equip the saints to do the work of the ministry.” That work is only possible when the church is a unified, committed body of members.

5. The Context for Love, Care, and Mission (Sent Together)

All the “one another” commands in Scripture—love one another, serve one another, encourage one another, bear one another’s burdens—demand a stable, committed community. Membership at Community Bible Church Strongs provides the safe, defined space for these spiritual bonds to grow, allowing us to be truly Sent Together into our community.

Hebrews 10:24–25 (ESV): “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Galatians 6:10 (ESV): “So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

We have a prioritized responsibility for those within our immediate family of faith. Philip Anthony Mitchell clearly states, “To not be committed to a local body is to willfully deprive yourself of the very provision God has made for your spiritual growth and protection.” Alistair Begg captures the heart of this when he says believers who float from church to church without commitment are like “spiritual orphans,” detached from the family structure God provided. Membership is God’s “special provision” for your spiritual health and nourishment, enabling us to better share the hope of Jesus with those around us. Greg Laurie reminds us of the church’s vital role as a light to the world: “The church is the visible presence of Jesus Christ in the world today.” Joining a local church is stepping into that mission.

Conclusion: The Joy of Belonging and Transforming the World

Ultimately, membership at Community Bible Church Strongs is not about rules or paperwork; it is a declaration: “I belong here, and this family belongs to me.” It’s the biblical way of exchanging spiritual independence for supportive, gospel accountability and joining the mission to make disciples who transform the world.

This commitment is an act of spiritual maturity that deepens your faith and joy. Another theologian beautifully describes church membership not as a legalistic duty, but as a profound, “blood-bought gift of God’s grace.” For him, the belonging and accountability are joy-preserving because they protect you from the isolation and drift that often cause believers to fall away.

By joining Community Bible Church Strongs, you publicly submit to the authority of Christ, commit your gifts to the mission of His people, and embrace the structure of care and accountability designed to ensure your faithfulness to the very end as we raise up the Future Leaders of the church.
