We often fall into the trap of believing a subtle, yet powerful lie: “Life would be better if I were in control.” This belief system, a kind of spiritual stronghold, creates a deep sense of anxiety and fear when things don’t go according to our plans. We strive to control our health, our finances, our relationships, and our future, thinking that if we just work hard enough or plan well enough, we can avoid all problems. But this relentless pursuit of control is a weakness in itself, and it keeps us from experiencing the peace that comes from truly relying on God.

The truth is, we are weak. We can’t do anything on our own. We can’t make our lungs take a breath, our hearts beat, or our brains function. Every single aspect of our lives is dependent on God. This isn’t a sign of our inadequacy; it’s a testament to His divine design and power. When Paul finally understood this, his perspective completely shifted. After hearing Jesus’s response about his weakness, he stopped asking for the “thorn” to be removed and began to “boast all the more” in his weaknesses. He understood that when he was weak, Christ’s power was made strong in him.

“Letting go of control isn’t a loss of power; it’s the beginning of true peace.”

Living a life of dependence means letting go of our tight grip on control and surrendering our will to God’s. It’s about waking up each day and acknowledging that we need Him for everything. This isn’t a sign of failure; it’s the beginning of a life of joy, peace, and freedom from the constant burden of trying to manage everything ourselves. When we submit our weaknesses to God, we give Him the opportunity to do what only He can do—to put His strength on display through our surrendered lives, showing the world a power that is far beyond our own.

This video, from a sermon series titled “Rooted,” discusses lasting conviction, a topic related to the sermon’s themes of faith and submission.

"The tighter our grip on control, the less room we leave for God's miraculous intervention."
